What are the ESC requirements under the new B Corp standards?

There are five core requirements - understanding environmental impacts, developing a strategy to address negative impacts, applying circularity principles, implementing and tracking, and supplier engagement. We translate each requirement into practical steps that work for your business.

  • Translating ESC requirements into clear, practical actions

  • Developing a focused strategy your team can actually use

  • Supported by expert human guidance and smart systems that deliver results

What should you consider before getting started with ESC?

The ESC requirements can feel overwhelming with guidance spanning hundreds of pages, but at their core, they're about understanding your environmental impacts and taking practical, measurable action. For existing B Corps, it means strengthening work already underway. For new applicants, it's a chance to build resilience from the start.

BOOK A CALL

What makes the ESC requirements challenging for SMEs?

Many SMEs struggle with ESC because it’s broad, detailed, and overlaps with other sustainability work. With the right guidance, what seems complex becomes manageable, helping you meet B Corp standards while improving efficiency and clarity.

Lengthy, technical
guidance

Interpreting nearly 300 pages of ESC guidance while running a business can feel overwhelming.

Uncertainty over
scope

Many SMEs struggle to judge which environmental impacts and data points are proportionate for their size and sector.

Topic overlap

ESC intersects with carbon, waste, and biodiversity, making it tricky to know where to focus.

Supplier
expectations

Setting realistic and achievable asks of suppliers can be challenging without experience.

Integration
challenges

Fitting ESC requirements into existing systems without duplication or extra work can be tricky and difficult.

Fear of bureaucracy

Small teams worry that policies and procedures will overwhelm limited resources.

The business case
for action

Environmental responsibility drives long-term business performance. Beyond meeting B Corp standards, there are compelling commercial reasons to get started.

Competitive
advantage

Between 2024-25, UK SME B Corps grew turnover 20% (vs 3% for all SMEs) and headcount 11% (vs 2%) (B Lab). Meeting ESC helps you stand out to clients, buyers, and investors.

Cost
savings

B Corps are nearly twice as likely to run on 100% renewable energy and have saved over 20 billion litres of water since 2022 (B Lab), showing that environmental action can reduce costs while cutting impact.

Employee
engagement

Purpose-led B Corps attract talent and improve retention: employee growth for UK SME B Corps has been 11% vs 2% for peers (B Lab), showing values-driven performance matters for teams.

Future-
proofing

Over the past decade, B Corps received a median £1.5m in growth funding, 18% more than other UK businesses, while 93% have stayed active since 2020 vs just 84% of UK businesses (B Lab). ESC readiness strengthens resilience and credibility.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What ESC requirements apply to my business?

The requirements vary considerably by business size and sector. Rather than wade through the guidance, create an account in the B Corp Impact Assessment tool and use the ‘Self Assessment’ section to establish what requirements apply.

How does ESC relate to our Climate Action Plan and carbon footprint?

They're closely linked, which is why we deliver both as one integrated package. Your carbon footprint contains all the data needed for ESC requirements, and ESC actions feed directly into your Climate Action Plan. We design the work so you avoid duplication, with each requirement reinforcing the others rather than creating separate, competing systems.

What does “circularity” actually mean for a service based SME?

Even if you do not make physical products, you still use energy, materials and equipment. Circularity might involve reducing single use items, increasing reuse and repair, specifying more durable equipment or considering the lifecycle of items you purchase. Nevertheless, services with a minor footprint (office-based businesses) are exempted from the ESC3 circularity requirements.

Do we need formal environmental policies and procedures?

You will need some documented policies, standards and guidance for workers so that your commitments are clear, clearly resourced and can be implemented consistently. Our EMS framework gives you a practical, lightweight way to put this in place without pages of paperwork.

How should we work with suppliers on ESC?

For SMEs, one of the main requirements is to consider environmental impacts in procurement decisions and start engaging key suppliers on your goals. We help you design a realistic, staged approach, so suppliers are forewarned, supported and given time to respond, rather than confronted with sudden demands.

How much does your ESC solution cost?

Our pricing is designed to be accessible for SMEs and covers both Climate Action Plan and ESC requirements as one integrated package. Pricing is based on business size, business type, and the level of support required. Book a call to get a tailored quote.
