BOOK A CALL

How do you achieve Green Business Certified status?

We review your EMS against three requirements:

  • a clear policy commitment to improving environmental management

  • an action plan to deliver that commitment, which addresses all of the significant environmental impacts of the business

  • from the end of year 1 onwards, ongoing improvement in the management of your impacts, i.e. delivery of actions in your action plan.

Certification focuses on meaningful progress, not bureaucratic compliance, and your annual renewal requires demonstrating improvement.

What does Green Business Certification include?

BOOK A CALL

What makes environmental certification challenging for SMEs?

Many SMEs want credible proof of environmental responsibility but struggle with where to start. Between gathering evidence, building systems, and demonstrating improvement, achieving recognised certification often feels overwhelming for small teams.

Demonstrating
continuous
improvement

Certification isn't a one-time achievement - annual renewal requires showing ongoing progress, which needs structured tracking and measurement.

Maintaining systems
over time

Even after achieving certification, keeping environmental management active and improving, not just documented, requires ongoing effort and focus.

Limited internal
resources

Environmental management often lands on someone's desk as an add-on to their day job, making systematic progress difficult alongside core responsibilities.

Understanding
what counts as
"equivalent."

When tenders request "ISO 14001 or equivalent," SMEs often don't know what credible alternatives qualify or how to evidence them properly.

Balancing ambition
with capacity

Small teams want meaningful environmental action, not bureaucratic systems, but struggle to find the right level of structure and formality.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What is Green Business Certification and how does it differ from ISO 14001?

Green Business Certification is independent third-party validation of your environmental management system and commitment to improvement.

Unlike ISO 14001, which requires formal auditing by accredited certification bodies (often costly and complex for SMEs), Green Business Certification uses a proportionate review process designed specifically for smaller businesses.

Both provide credible evidence for procurement and clients, but Green Business Certification is accessible and affordable for SMEs.

What are the requirements for Green Business Certification?

We look for two things: (1) A stated commitment to improving management of all significant environmental impacts of your business, and (2) A policy and action plan in place to deliver that commitment.

Every business is unique, so we don't use rigid checklists - we assess whether your EMS demonstrates genuine environmental management and continuous improvement.

How much does Green Business Certification cost?

Our pricing is designed to be accessible for SMEs and is based on business size, business type, and the level of support required. See our pricing guide or contact us for a tailored quote. Book a call with the team to get a tailored quote.

Do we need an EMS before we can get certified?

Yes. Certification verifies your environmental management system, so you need a working EMS in place first - including environmental policy and action plan addressing your significant impacts.

We can help you build a proportionate EMS through our EMS service, building on anything you already have, then certify it once active.

Can Green Business Certification be used for tenders requesting "ISO 14001 or equivalent"?

Yes. Our certification is used by dozens of clients as credible evidence for procurement requirements requesting ISO 14001 or equivalent.

We can also provide an EMS Manual responding to all mandatory ISO 14001 requirements where closer alignment is needed for specific tenders. If the requirement is for an EMS which is formally verified by an accredited verification body, Green Business Certification will not be suitable.

How does annual renewal work?

Each year, you must demonstrate ongoing improvement in managing your environmental impacts to renew certification. This involves updating your action plan, showing progress on previous commitments, and identifying new improvement opportunities. Our portal makes tracking straightforward, and we provide guidance throughout the year.

Will this help with B Corp certification?

Yes. Green Business Certified Environmental Management Systems provide structure for many of the requirements in B Corp’s Climate Action and Environmental Stewardship and Circularity topics. certifications. Many clients use our certification as part of their B Corp journey, reducing duplication across multiple frameworks.

What's included beyond the certificate itself?

Certification includes: annual independent review and validation, certificate and certified status you can display publicly, ongoing portal access for EMS tracking and resources, expert guidance to support continuous improvement, and eligibility to use Green Business Certified branding in marketing materials and proposals.

Can we achieve certification if we're just starting our environmental journey?

Yes. We welcome businesses at all stages of environmental maturity. What matters is having a genuine commitment to improvement and systems in place to deliver it - not where you're starting from. Many newly certified businesses are early in their journey but demonstrate clear intent and structured management.
