BOOK A CALL

Accredited or independent verification - what's right for your business?

There are two types of carbon footprint verification, and it's worth understanding the difference before you proceed.

  • Accredited verification is carried out by organisations holding formal UKAS accreditation. It is required in specific circumstances, for example, by large companies applying under the new B Corp standard, or where a regulatory framework explicitly mandates it.

  • Independent verification (which is what we offer) follows the same recognised methodology (ISO 14064-3) and provides the same rigorous, structured review of your data, assumptions, and calculations. For the vast majority of SMEs, independent verification is exactly what's needed to satisfy buyer requirements, strengthen tender responses, and build stakeholder confidence.

If you're unsure which type applies to your situation, get in touch with our team and we'll point you in the right direction, even if that means referring you elsewhere.

How do we help you get verified carbon data?

Our verification process is structured, transparent, and built around recognised standards - but delivered in plain English. We work collaboratively with your team to review data quality, check methodology, and identify any gaps, turning verification from a gatekeeping exercise into a confidence-building process.

Working Together

We work with you - not against you - to understand your footprint and data sources

Keep it simple

Apply GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-3 standards without unnecessary complexity

Clear Actions

Deliver crystal clear findings and actionable guidance, not just a pass/fail stamp

Services we offer including carbon footprinting, environmental management, and sustainability certification

What does our carbon footprint verification actually deliver?

Independent verification gives stakeholders confidence in your carbon data. You receive a verification statement confirming your footprint is complete and methodologically sound, plus recommendations that will strengthen reporting, certification applications, tenders, and investor engagement.

  • Receive confirmation your footprint meets recognised standards (GHG Protocol, ISO 14064-3)

  • Get an independent check of emissions data, assumptions, and calculations across Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3

  • Receive a clear report identifying strengths, improvements, and any methodological adjustments needed

What should you consider before verification?

Verification works best when we understand the story behind your numbers. You don't need perfect data - our role is to bring clarity and structure. Considering a few practical points upfront helps us review efficiently and ensures you get maximum value from the process.

Do you need verification quickly?

We help SMEs organise data and prepare for independent review, often turning around verification outputs rapidly once footprints are complete.

BOOK A CALL

What makes carbon footprint verification challenging for SMEs?

For many SMEs, verification feels unfamiliar because most businesses have never needed this level of detail before. These challenges are completely normal, and they are usually practical rather than technical. With the right guidance, they are straightforward to overcome.

Understanding
what's required

Terms like verification, assurance, and validation often get mixed up - we explain the differences in simple, practical language.

Bringing data
together

SMEs often keep information in different places or formats, which is completely typical. Verification helps organise what you already have.

Defining
scope

Deciding which emissions to include can feel uncertain, but this is part of the process and not something you need to resolve beforehand.

Explaining
your approach

You don't need formal documentation. A short note on how figures were created is enough for us to start.

Help for every step of the way

We follow a structured three-step approach rooted in best practice and designed for SMEs.

1. Initial Evidence Review

We start with a focused walkthrough of your footprint, data sources and methodology. This helps us understand how your numbers were built, identify any immediate gaps, and agree what level of verification is proportionate for your business.

2. Detailed Verification Testing

We independently check your emissions data, assumptions and calculations against recognised standards (GHG Protocol and ISO 14064‑3). This includes sampling data for accuracy, assessing completeness across scopes, and reviewing documentation.

3. Clear Findings & Verification

You receive a structured report summarising strengths, opportunities and any required adjustments. Where your footprint meets the standard, we issue a verification statement confirming your data is materially correct - ready to share with clients, investors or frameworks.

What happens if you don’t verify your carbon footprint?

Unverified emissions data can slow procurement processes, weaken investor confidence, and undermine even well-intended climate claims. Verification gives your numbers the credibility stakeholders increasingly expect.

BOOK A CALL

The business case
for action

Verification makes your carbon data trustworthy and increases confidence with clients, investors and regulators. It also strengthens internal decision-making and reduces risk from misstatement.

Risk
reduction

51% of large UK corporations now mandate carbon data from suppliers to protect their own compliance (Net Zero Business Census, 2025). Verified data signals you're audit-ready.

Market
advantage

Verified emissions give you an edge in procurement and investor contexts, with 80% of UK investors now mandating carbon metrics before making investment decisions (Deloitte/Tufts, 2024), verified emissions gives you an edge in procurement and investor contexts.

Better
decision-making

UK SMEs implementing carbon strategies see 25-30% efficiency gains through resource optimisation (Profit Impact/SME Census), but only when working from accurate baseline data.

Stronger
credibility

Businesses that proactively report on ESG metrics see a 32% increase in customer loyalty (British Chamber of Commerce, 2023)

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What is carbon footprint verification?

Verification is an independent review that assesses whether your carbon footprint calculations and reporting are materially correct and reliable, based on recognised standards like ISO 14064-3.

Do I need verification?

It depends on your reporting needs, buyer requirements, or regulatory expectations. Some frameworks and clients increasingly ask for independent assurance of emissions data.

How long does verification take?

Once your carbon footprint is complete and documented, verification review timelines vary with complexity, but we help keep it as efficient as possible.

What data is reviewed?

Verification focuses on your primary emissions data, methodologies, assumptions and calculation results across Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3.

Can you verify footprints you didn’t calculate?

Yes, provided we have access to the data, methods and documentation needed for an independent review.

What's the difference between your verification and accredited verification?

Some verification requirements (particularly for large companies under the new B Corp standards, or certain regulatory frameworks) specify that verification must be carried out by a UKAS-accredited body.

We are not UKAS-accredited. What we offer is an independent verification service that follows the ISO 14064-3 methodology, the same recognised standard used by accredited verifiers.

For most SMEs, this is the appropriate and proportionate level of verification. If you're unsure whether your specific requirements call for accredited verification, we're happy to help you work that out.
